The town can be found in the North East of England. Proximity to A1, the East Coast main railway line and Newcastle International Airport make for excellent accessibility and rapid transport. The town has a good balance of mixed retail property and commercial services and light industry. Morpeths central Northumberland location as an ideal base from which to explore the entire county. As well as having its own range of attractions accommodation and entertainment. Morpeth is convenient for the city centre attractions of Newcastle upon Tyne. It is a desirable town in which to live with quality schools good housing and an excellent location. The administrative HQ for local government in Northumberland is found in Morpeth. The River Wansbeck flows through the centre of the town and provides riverside walks linked to the attractive Carlisle Park. There is also a leisure centre and swimming pool.

Northumberland is the only county with its own musical instrument the Northumbrian pipes. This museum follows the development of bagpipes around the world using a unique sound system with personal headphones.

The clock tower in the town centre is very unusual, it has a free standing bell tower not connected to any other building, such as church. It still sounds the night curfew at eight o clock every evening. The divisions on the clock are also unusual in that there are only four divisions between the hour numbers. This was because when the clock was first built it only had one hand the hour hand.

Famous Northumbrians include Admiral Lord Collingwood. He was Horatio Nelsons second in command at the Battle of Trafalgar taking over the fleet on Nelsons death and holding the Mediterranean command thereafter.

Ghost and legends include the invasion of the Body Snatchers. St Marys Churchyard in Morpeth has a watchtower built in 1830. It was provided to guard against body snatchers who found the graveyard a particularly convenient point on the A1 to allow for a quick getaway. The bodies, needed to be fresh, were stolen to sell to the Medical Schools in Edinburgh for dissection and analysis.

A horse riding school can be found two miles North East of Morpeth. There is one qualified instructor offering group lessons to beginners and advance riders. It is an outdoor arena, which includes show jumping.

Understanding The Signs Of Horse Health To Protect Your Animal

As any pet is cared for within the home, the care for horses is very much the same; ensuring the proper medical, physical, and nutritional care for a horse is part of the responsibility of its owners. There are many different facets of horse health and all must be attended to in order to ensure the horse’s vitality and longevity.

In order to be well-versed on horse health it is important to understand the signs of a healthy horse; conversely when those signs wane, you will immediately be alerted to a possible decline in the health of your horse. One quick indicator of horse health is the overall appearance of the animal. A healthy horse has a shiny, slick coat with a hard hoof. Any nutritional issues would immediately show up on the horse’s coat – resulting in dullness, slowed shedding, and even bald patches. Additionally, dry and cracked hoofs could be a sign of dehydration or poor circulation.

Of course, not much tells a greater story of horse health than the horse’s eating and drinking behaviors. The sudden and ongoing decrease in appetite or refusal to eat and drink altogether can be a common sign of a horse in dangerous health. Pay attention to the amount of grazing a horse does during the course of the day, its ability to hold food in its mouth and chew (problems with this could indicate teeth/mouth conditions) as well as the frequency with which it urinates and eliminates waste, and any weight fluctuations in the animal.

One of the most important indicators of horse health is behavior; like people, horses have their own personalities so what behavior may inspire concern when exhibited by one horse may be well within the boundaries of another horse’s personality. But there are a few common behaviors that generally signal distress across the board including the appearance of anxiety, lethargy or fatigue, decreased socialization, and stall weaving – a behavior signaling heightened anxiety wherein the horse paces around its stall. A healthy horse should also move unreservedly; any limping or bobbing of the head often indicates painful movement and a veterinarian should be consulted immediately.

As a matter of fact, the most important step to preserving horse health is an established relationship with a reputable veterinarian. As a horse owner, you are the first line of defense in maintaining the health of your horse; you are in a better position than anyone to recognize signs and symptoms that may indicate trouble for your horse. A veterinarian, however, in addition to performing frequent check-ups, can help you identify and address any health concerns you have throughout the lifetime of the horse.

Owning a horse can be a wonderful experience; but also an enormous responsibility. Just as children depend on us to care for them in every capacity, a domesticated horse relies on its human companions in much the same way. In this role, it is incumbent upon us to understand the many facets of horse health and do all that we can to do to protect the lives and vitality of our animal friends.

Any good books, about how to take care of an older horse?

I’ve never read any of them, so I don’t if they are good or not.
For an older horse the most important things are good quality feed, regular vertrinary care (teeth floating, etc) lot’s of gentle exercise if they can handle it, and regular turnout. Good luck with your horse!

Is it safe to ride a horse without a sadle?

Ok, i love riding horses but i hate saddling a horse up. Is it safe to ride just bare back with a bridle or is it safer to ride with just a sadle blanket and a bridle?
I have rid bare back people! It doesnt hurt me. I rid a underweight horse once with his spine sticking out.. OK it doesnt hurt to me!!!! I just want to know if its safe

Why are you bragging about riding an underweight horse who had his spine sticking out? That’s sick.

It’s safe if you’re a good rider and your horse is well-behaved.

Horse back riding lessons? What do i need to buy?

well i just started horse back horse riding lessons Guide Amazon.com’;return true;” onmouseout=”self.status=””>riding lessons and my trainer told me to buy gloves, helmet and boots. but not long boots ( or field boots)because you only really need them for show and she said to hold off on that. she also said to buy paddock boots. so i was wandering if i should buy some breeches to and chaps so when i wear my breeches they won’t get torn up. i was wandering too if there is anything else i need to buy and if so please tell me. also here is the link to the breeches, paddock boots, and chaps too look and review the price, type, and quality and tell me if they are a good deal and will work well…. thanks and bye

Instead of wearing breeches for lessons, i wear practice tights. Breeches in my opinion are not always so comfy. The practice riding pants are more comfortable, usually cheaper, and they are easy to replace. Arait is a good brand for boots, but if you are just starting then you may just want to go with a cheaper brand. Half chaps are a great idea. They are soo comfortable, and they give you a better grip while riding. I wear The Elite brand for half chaps and i love them…Have fun riding!!

They are a little bit of a hike for you …..about 45 minutes away. But they do offer an overnight week camp. My son is going the end of July….he is 8. The place is awesome. There is a Wild West, Texas Town, and Indian Village. The activities alone and horse leesons are worth the $$. I highly recommend it! They are open to the public on May 16th…….go and check it out.

At what age could I start my daughter with horse riding lessons?

Shes 4, I know shes too young to start now… but shes interested in it and i just wanted a gauge of what a good age to start would be.

It has less to do with the child’s age and more with her maturity and the safety precautions you take.

Many stables offering riding lessons don’t take children under age eight to ten, depending on their insurance. So if you don’t have a horse of your own or access to a friend or family member’s horse that is child-safe, you may have to stick to pony rides until she’s older.

If you do have access to an appropriate horse or pony, then the most important thing is to make sure your daughter stays safe and happy. Keep rides short – 5-10 minutes, as young children fatigue easily. Get a child saddle that is appropriately sized for her (Wintec makes a child’s leadline saddle that has no tree, so it can be fitted to any horse) or get some "Lil’ buddy stirrups" – which are stirrups which attach to a western saddle horn and are adjustable to fit kids from toddlers to kids about 8, so they can grow with your daughter. Make sure she has an appropriately sized helmet, and if she’s going to ride regularly, consider a protective vest.

For her first rides, have someone you trust lead the horse while you walk alongside your child. Even if she insists that she’s alright, hold on to her the first few times until she finds her balance, and even then, walk close to her for awhile after that. Once she’s comfortable and confident without you holding on or being within a few feet of her, then you can consider not having a side-walker and maybe letting her out on 10-15 feet of lunge line.

You want to go slow and let her set the pace.

Also, a good rule of thumb is that for every minute she spends in the saddle, she should spend two working with the horse on the ground – learning safety skills (not to walk behind or under the horse, how to lead, etc).
