How to convince my parents I don’t want horse back riding lessons? http://horseridinglessonsguide.com/horse-back-riding-lessons/how-to-convince-my-parents-i-dont-want-horse-back-riding-lessons http://horseridinglessonsguide.com/horse-back-riding-lessons/how-to-convince-my-parents-i-dont-want-horse-back-riding-lessons#comments Tue, 18 May 2010 16:41:17 +0000 admin http://horseridinglessonsguide.com/horse-back-riding-lessons/how-to-convince-my-parents-i-dont-want-horse-back-riding-lessons It sounds amazing… but my dad is really stressed with work and bills and money and other adult things. So not the best time. At all. I was just bored not going to school on campus and was jealous that my brothers got all the sports and instruments and other school activites, so I wanted to do some sort of activity too. But really my dad is already stressed with enough things… so how do I make them believe I’m just not interested in it anymore?

If things were really bad, they’d probably tell you. If they’re like most parents, they know that horseback riding lessons aren’t necessary for your survival, and they won’t pay for it if they can’t. The fact that they’re willing to do it–even though it may be tough right now–shows that they care about you and want you to do something you enjoy. Let them! Yes, talk to them and tell them that you understand if they can’t (essentially, give them an "out"), but show your appreciation for their willingness to do so.

Also, I agree with Julie–why not help pay for it? Either get a job and pay for it directly, or offer to help around the house more (babysitting your brothers if they’re young, chores/odd jobs, etc.) to relieve some of the burden on them. But it makes complete sense that you would want–and need–some sort of physical activity and outlet if you aren’t able to be involved in other activities (I assume you’re homeschooled?). If you want to be around horses but the lessons themselves are too expensive, see if you can just volunteer at a barn–maybe even in exchange for a lesson occasionally. You’ll be occupied rather than bored, you’ll enjoy the horses, and you’ll save your parents money.

if a teenager wanted to take horse back riding lessons how does one decide which discipline to start with? http://horseridinglessonsguide.com/horse-back-riding-lessons/if-a-teenager-wanted-to-take-horse-back-riding-lessons-how-does-one-decide-which-discipline-to-start-with http://horseridinglessonsguide.com/horse-back-riding-lessons/if-a-teenager-wanted-to-take-horse-back-riding-lessons-how-does-one-decide-which-discipline-to-start-with#comments Mon, 03 May 2010 11:58:19 +0000 admin http://horseridinglessonsguide.com/horse-back-riding-lessons/if-a-teenager-wanted-to-take-horse-back-riding-lessons-how-does-one-decide-which-discipline-to-start-with how does one decide between english or western, dressage or saddleseat or any of the other types of riding out there.

Try riding in an english and western saddle and decide which one you prefer.
Once you do that, your choices narrow down.
Then once you decide english or western, EXPERIMENT! Try the things you want to do to see what you like.
Once you experiment enough you’ll find what you like and then you’ve got what kind of riding you prefer.
But always start with the style (English or Western).
I won’t tell you what to try, since people are different, but I can honestly say after doing both a fair bit, I prefer Western.

Personally, I started with English at a week-long horse camp, but then I went to a trail riding place where we used western saddles and I prefered that, so I switched to Western.
After moving across the country and down into another country (eastern Canada to western USA), I tried different lesson places and alternated with English and Western because of it.
Now, about 5 years after moving to and from the U.S, I still prefer Western.
I’m going to try English again. I learned everything I needed to know with basic western so I’m going to try English… again…

Explore your options, but just take two lessons where you try English and then western on a horse.

When horse-back riding is it better to sit the gallop or to adopt a two-point position? http://horseridinglessonsguide.com/horse-back-riding-lessons/when-horse-back-riding-is-it-better-to-sit-the-gallop-or-to-adopt-a-two-point-position http://horseridinglessonsguide.com/horse-back-riding-lessons/when-horse-back-riding-is-it-better-to-sit-the-gallop-or-to-adopt-a-two-point-position#comments Mon, 26 Apr 2010 13:01:47 +0000 admin http://horseridinglessonsguide.com/horse-back-riding-lessons/when-horse-back-riding-is-it-better-to-sit-the-gallop-or-to-adopt-a-two-point-position I am taking horse-back horse riding lessons Guide Amazon.com’;return true;” onmouseout=”self.status=””>riding lessons and I’m taught to sit the gallop. When I watch races however the riders aren’t sitting in the gallop. Is this usually the way you start learning? I mean, im finding sitting the gallop very hard and I imagine the other position would be easier.
Which position is easier??

Thank you

It depends on the instructor. Sitting the gallop is easier for you, but also harder on the horses back in some cases if you are not well balanced.

2 point, is hard on you, but easier for the horse.

Jockeys use two point because with less weight actually on the horses back, it can go faster.

Hi,

I used to ride, too, and I wish I could do it now. I will take up riding again, when I have the time and $$$.

Do you want to learn English, or Western? I’ve tried both.

I much prefer Western style horseback riding. English is really elegant and I like to watch it, but I didn’t like the little tiny saddle, posting, etc. Western is much more fun, at least it was for me.

The best advice I can give, with my personal experience, is to be picky.

I’ve learned to be really selective when choosing a riding instructor. Shop around, ask questions, get recommendations. I had one who absolutely sucked… this person would take their kids to the stables with them and spend most of my lesson time yelling at her kids not to play with snakes, etc. I got almost no personal attention… and I was wasting my money, not to mention a safety issue.

I miss riding and look forward to doing it again… and I hope it works out for you to have lessons soon.

I remember that I had riding pants, a helmet, boots and a crop, but those don’t fit anymore. Are those all the things I need to repurchase? Are there any discount stores for beginners? Thanks :D And any tips for riding horses?

Yes, you would need new riding pants that fit you, probably a new helmet and boots. I don’t think there are any stores that have discounts for beginners, atleast not that I know about.

Here are some websites that sell horse riding apparel:

So, if you take lessons, how do you like it? Do you think it is worth my time and money? Any stories you want to share?

A while back, I did take lessons. And just to say, I loved it. Even though I didn’t get THAT far into it, I still learned a lot, but I took lessons in England, so I’m not sure how they are where you are. But it seems fun any way around it. I think I liked it also, because I am a HUGE animal lover, and I just liked to ride the horses. =DD

With riding lessons, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. You shouldn’t choose a trainer based solely on cost.

If the problem is that you have a limited budget, you might approach the trainer you select and ask if it’s possible to do work around the stable (grooming the horses, cleaning tack, mucking out the stable, doing office work) in return for riding lessons. If the trainer takes clients to horse shows, you might be able to work as a groom at the shows he/she goes to in return for lessons.

Things you should look for in choosing a trainer for riding lessons:

1. How do the lesson horses look? Are they healthy-looking, well-groomed and housed in reasonable facilities? How do they act when they’re in the ring being ridden?

2. How are the facilities? Are things held together with duct tape and baling wire, or are things neat and tidy and in good repair? Are the riding rings where the lessons are given large, with good footing and good drainage, and some kind of sprinkler system to keep the dust down? Are the fences around the riding rings in good repair? Are the rings reserved for lessons, or will there be other people riding in the ring at the same time you are having lessons?

3. Is the tack the horses wear serviceable and clean? Does the trainer expect students to clean their own tack after lessons, or does someone else clean it for them? Does the tack fit the horses properly? Do any of the horses have chafed or raw spots from wearing improperly-fitted tack?

4. Is the trainer/instructor safety conscious? Horseback riding is dangerous. Does the trainer require all trainees to wear protective headgear? What about proper footwear? If trainees are allowed to carry and use a riding crop or stick, are they instructed in its proper use and the possible reactions of a horse to application of the crop? Does the trainer/instructor make sure that he/she has all necessary information on file to assure that if the trainee is hurt, the trainer can contact the proper people and see to it that the medical people have the necessary information to begin treatment immediately?

5. What seems to be the goal that trainer pushes his/her clients towards? Is the trainer primarily interested in training people for horse shows? Does he/she have little or no interest in instructing people who just want to pleasure ride? Does he/she treat all clients equally well, or does he/she favor clients who have their own horses and intend to show?

6. What do the trainer’s clients act like when they are around the trainer? Do they seem happy and relaxed? Are they anxious and tense when the trainer instructs them? Does the trainer treat them with couresy and respect? Does the trainer ever belittle any of his/her clients when they aren’t around? If a client doesn’t seem to be making progress, does the trainer seem willing to discuss the possibility of referring the client to another trainer?

7. How does the trainer handle horses that belong to clients? Does the trainer school the horses himself/herself, or are the horses given to assistants to work with? Does the trainer treat horses like tools to be used and discarded, or does the trainer seem to feel affection for all horses and care about what happens to them? Is the trainer constantly pushing clients to buy better horses?

8. How do other trainers in the area speak about the trainer you’re considering? Do they speak respectfully of the trainer, or disparagingly?

9. If the trainer you are considering is a show trainer, try to go to a show or two where he/she will be there with clients, and observe the way things go. Are the clients who are competing happy and relaxed or tense and unhappy? How does the trainer treat each client after they ride in a class? Does the trainer discuss the ride with the client? If so, how is the trainer’s demeanor? Calm, tense, angry, snappish? Does the trainer belittle bad rides or use them as "teachable moments"?

Choosing the right trainer can make the difference between having a life-long joy in riding or feeling like you’ve made a descent into hell. Don’t let cost be the only factor in choosing a riding trainer. Mostly in life we get what we pay for.
